Why the Sabbath Still Matters in a Sunday World
Understanding God’s Rest, God’s Commandment, and God’s Blessing
By New Beginnings Faith Ministries
The world is louder now than it has ever been. People are busy, overwhelmed, stressed, and constantly on the move. Jobs demand more. Life pulls harder. And many believers today feel spiritually drained because the simple, powerful rhythm God created for rest has been forgotten.
But God never changed His commandment.
In this first article of the New Beginnings Faith Ministries blog, we are going to break down why the Sabbath is still holy, still relevant, and still a divine blessing that God designed for His people — even in a Sunday-driven world.
Let’s walk through the truth together using the King James Version (KJV), the Word that stands forever.
1. God Created the Sabbath Before There Was a Jew, a Church, or a Religion
Most people think the Sabbath started with Moses. But the Bible shows it began long before.
“And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had made; and He rested… And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it.”
— Genesis 2:2–3 (KJV)
Before Abraham.
Before Israel.
Before Sinai.
God Himself rested.
God blessed the seventh day.
God sanctified the seventh day.
God set it apart to show us the pattern of rest.
So the Sabbath didn’t start with the Jews…
It started with Creation.
2. The Sabbath Is One of the Ten Commandments — Not a Suggestion
God never said the Sabbath was optional.
He commanded it.
“Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.”
— Exodus 20:8 (KJV)
This is the only commandment that starts with Remember — because God knew many would forget it.
He continues:
“But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God…”
— Exodus 20:10 (KJV)
Not “a Sabbath.”
Not “choose any day.”
Not “your personal preference.”
THE seventh day.
And God didn’t change His own commandment. The Bible never records a single verse where God switched the Sabbath from the seventh day to the first day.
The world changed it — not God.
3. Jesus Kept the Sabbath — and Expected His Disciples To Continue Keeping It
Jesus (Yahawashi) honored the Sabbath throughout His earthly life.
“And he came to Nazareth… and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day…”
— Luke 4:16 (KJV)
"As His custom was" means Jesus kept the Sabbath regularly, continuously, faithfully.
And after His resurrection, Jesus did not remove the Sabbath.
He told His disciples to keep it even in the future:
“But pray ye that your flight be not in the winter, neither on the sabbath day.”
— Matthew 24:20 (KJV)
This prophecy speaks of events after the resurrection — proving the Sabbath was still in effect.
4. The Early Church Continued to Keep the Seventh-Day Sabbath
Some say "Sunday worship replaced the Sabbath," but the Bible strongly disagrees.
After the resurrection:
-
The apostles kept the Sabbath
-
The believers gathered on the Sabbath
-
The gospel was preached on the Sabbath
“And Paul, as his manner was… reasoned with them out of the scriptures… every sabbath.”
— Acts 17:2 (KJV)
“And he reasoned in the synagogue every sabbath, and persuaded the Jews and the Greeks.”
— Acts 18:4 (KJV)
Not just Jews — Greeks too.
The Sabbath was for everyone who followed Christ.
5. The World Changed the Sabbath — Not God
If the Sabbath is the 7th day…
Why do most churches worship on Sunday?
Historically, Sunday worship began hundreds of years after the early church, through:
-
Roman influence
-
Emperor Constantine
-
Religious tradition
But God never changed it.
“For I am the LORD, I change not.”
— Malachi 3:6 (KJV)
If God blessed the seventh day at Creation…
He blesses it the same way today.
6. The Sabbath Is a Covenant Sign Between God and His People
God calls the Sabbath a sign — a spiritual mark of obedience.
“It is a sign between me and the children of Israel for ever.”
— Exodus 31:17 (KJV)
This sign has not expired.
“Forever” means forever.
By keeping the Sabbath, we step into:
-
God's rhythm
-
God's blessing
-
God's protection
-
God's holiness
It is an act of love.
7. Sabbath Rest Still Brings Healing, Peace, and Breakthrough Today
We live in a high-pressure, overwhelmed, spiritually exhausted generation.
But God’s solution never changed.
Sabbath is God’s gift for:
-
Rest
-
Peace
-
Renewal
-
Restoration
-
Resetting your spirit
-
Realigning your mind
-
Reconnecting with God
When you honor the Sabbath:
Your home becomes calmer.
Your spirit becomes clearer.
Your body becomes lighter.
Your walk with Jesus becomes stronger.
8. What the Sabbath Means for You Today
You don’t keep the Sabbath to earn salvation.
You keep it because you love God and want to obey Him.
Jesus said:
“If ye love me, keep my commandments.”
— John 14:15 (KJV)
The Sabbath is a weekly reminder that:
-
You belong to God
-
You live by His rhythm
-
You trust His Word
-
You follow His commandments
It is a covenant, a blessing, and a sign of relationship.
Final Thought: God Wants You to Rest
The Sabbath isn’t just about stopping work.
It’s about:
-
Honoring God
-
Trusting His Word
-
Resting in His presence
-
Recharging spiritually
-
Remembering your identity in Him
The world is tired… but God’s people don’t have to be.
The Sabbath is still holy.
Still blessed.
Still God’s commandment.
And still a gift to His people today.
